Cass Rawlings
I start with an idea which has grabbed my interest and imagination. I research around the topic widely which feeds into the background from which to draw on for inspiration before starting to sketch, make jottings and play with materials. I also make word lists that are pertinent to the subject.
Gradually this array of ‘stuff’ is whittled down to essential features, and the design begins to emerge in whatever seems suitable to the qualities identified as characterising the idea. The design or the essence of it is translated into a textile piece, interpreting it in a fabric, made or bought, and stitch.
