Art Through Textiles

Jay Johnson

I gained a BA in fine art at Leeds Polytechnic, where my work centred around textiles.

My work reflects a lifelong love of the Yorkshire and Derbyshire dales landscapes: the patterns made by the walls, the way in which the light and the sky change the colours. This landscape shows us the ancient past: stone age hut circles and  fortifications, medieval field patterns, the spoil from old mines.

I interpret these features of landscape in hand embroidery, appliqué and fabric manipulation—slash and burn—and in feltwork.
