Made in Sheffield’ is in fact a registered trademark belonging to the City of Sheffield. Its use is carefully controlled and is awarded to acknowledge high standards of craftsmanship produced in the City.

Art Through Textiles applied for and received, the permission and full support of the City in our use of this mark, for the duration of these exhibitions.

It was agreed our exhibition should demonstrate the creativity of our members as well as reflecting the rich and inspirational area in which we live and work.

We set out to show our affection for, and pride in, the City of Sheffield, its people and the surrounding area.

In the words of Charles Turner, the Chair of the ‘Made in Sheffield’ committee,

“ Good Luck and let’s tell the World it is ‘Made in Sheffield’.”

46 members took part and work  reflected  a wide range of textile approaches, based upon personal responses to diverse aspects of Sheffield, its history, industry, culture, geography, architecture and society.

Members made use of the various heritage and museum collections in the City as well as more personal reference to family and friends.

We successfully applied for a Lottery grant, which was used to support these exhibitions as well as helping to develop an extensive educational programme, which will take place throughout 2008, involving many members of Art Through Textiles working within different sectors of the community.

‘Made in Sheffield’

This is the title of our exhibition, which showed at the Knitting and Stitching Shows in Birmingham and Harrogate in the autumn of 2007.
